LAW CLERK - TAX DISPUTES

Work From HomeLegal & CompliancePosted Sep 24

Make your next big career move by applying as KMC Solutions’ next LAW CLERK - TAX DISPUTES

Tax disputes are won on preparation. Whether an objection succeeds often turns on whether the chronology is right, every CRA letter is accounted for, the schedules tie, and the package is complete and filed on time. The Law Clerk is the engine room of that work: you will work inside live matters as a full member of our legal team - supporting our Toronto and Ottawa lawyers from Manila. This posting will suit senior paralegals and law clerks with international experience.

On top of your salary, here are the exciting benefits you can look forward to:

  • Opportunity to work closely with Toronto and Ottawa lawyers as an integrated member of the legal team.
  • Meaningful drafting responsibilities for legal submissions, CRA correspondence, and court-related documents.
  • Strong focus on analytical and financial skills through reconciliation work, and settlement modeling.
  • International legal exposure supporting a Canadian law firm from the Philippines.
  • Predictable daytime Philippine schedule with limited evening overlap for Canadian collaboration.
  • Ontario statutory holidays observed.
  • Growing, specialized law firm offering opportunities for professional development and increased responsibility.
  • High-impact role where accuracy, organization, and legal drafting directly influence client outcomes.

The main responsibilities of a LAW CLERK - TAX DISPUTES include:

  • Drafting. Prepare first drafts of notices of objection, taxpayer relief applications, voluntary disclosure applications, CRA correspondence and internal memos, working from lawyer instructions.

  • Document mastery. Build and maintain chronologies, document books and exhibit sets; log and organize client records; reconcile client documents against CRA statements of account.

  • Numbers. Prepare and check the Excel schedules behind net worth assessments, penalty and interest calculations, and settlement scenarios. Comfort with spreadsheets is core to this role, not optional.

  • Deadlines. Track statutory timelines and maintain the bring-forward system so nothing is ever missed.

  • CRA process. Prepare and pursue access-to-information (ATIP) requests, and assemble complete, well-organized submissions to CRA standards.

  • Court support. Assemble Tax Court of Canada filings and books of documents to court standards, under lawyer direction.

  • File hygiene. Keep matters current in Clio: documents filed, tasks updated, time recorded.

To apply, you must be an expert on the following requirements:

  • Five or more years as a law clerk, paralegal or legal specialist supporting litigation, tax or regulatory work. Offshore support of Canadian, US, UK or Australian firms is strongly preferred.

  • A degree in Legal Management, Political Science or a related field; a Juris Doctor or Philippine Bar membership is an asset.

  • Exceptional written English - your drafts go to lawyers, the CRA and, ultimately, courts.

  • Strong Excel: reconciliations, multi-year schedules, and totals that tie.

  • Ferocious deadline discipline. In tax disputes, a missed date can extinguish a client's rights.

  • The kind of attention to detail that notices when a number in a schedule does not match its source document.

It will also be favorable if you are knowledgeable in:

  • Additional relevant knowledge or experience related to the above requirements will be considered an advantage.
